A Fakie reverse is very similar to a fakie sweep, but as the name suggests is done on a reverse and not a sweep. Fakies on staggers enable us to take a shorter line between gates, and avoid needing a x bow where we may not have time to do one. Below is a an overhead diagram and video of the lines of the hips. As we can see we can take a very direct short line between gates. By having the hips outside of the inside pole of the gate, this means we have less distance to travel across river to the next gate. Although a very shortline is taken it is very easy to lose running speed (speed of the boat) during this. Due to the tail being sunk underwater there is an element of squirt/pop acceleration away but just be aware of this.
These two techniques combined means he could take a very direct line.
