What are the advantages of switching?
The onside blade can often produce more power, and can stop the boat swinging (turning too much) and push the boat towards the next gate quicker.
How to Switch
Also with a practical example
Below is a set of screenshots showing the switch close up
One of the main draw backs from switching is the time taken to switch. Switching in the right places to not lose time during the switch is key. As we have discussed, switching to have the blade on the inside of the turn is often advantageous. Below are other examples of where we can switch

How to get better at Switching?
A lot of this comes down to if you want to switch, why you want to switch, and how good you feel you already are at it. Time on task - Think about adding to warm up? Design courses and dedicating whole session to Switching techniques/Tactics ( Switch Spins/Punts to Switch) Paddle 50% of the time as a Lefty 50% time as a Righty Build up strength on both sides - gym work, Resistance sessions (using bungees etc) on both sides Thinking about arcs and loops - having the blade on the inside of a turn We will look more into switching and planning to switch in more articles later

Switching doesn't 'save energy' per se as you've still got the move to do. What it does save is excess muscle fatigue on the one side, as it gives that side a 'breather'. However, that shouldn't be the key reason for switching really.
